Hello👋 folks, Shubham here.
I am back with another edition of Curiosity 101.
Doorknob Disclosures
This is an intriguing concept I came across recently.
Doorknob disclosures are painful and embarrassing revelations communicated at the end of the meeting or session usually by the person who is about to leave.
They are a common thing in clinical encounters. Patients wait till the last moment when either they or their examiner is about to leave (typically near the doors hence the name doorknob disclosures) to reveal something crucial.
The info may be about falling back into toxic cycles, or a taunt highlighting their meekness.
You guys must have observed people using sarcasm to reveal their insecurities or traumas.
Doorknob disclosures are something like that.
The reason people do this is that it gives the respondent minimal time to react.
Usually, people tell their dark secrets at the end of the appointments. The fact that they can’t discuss it any further makes it bearable.
Yes, it may be the hot topic for the next session but for now, they are free of the burden.
Clinical encounters are just one example.
In our daily lives, we see people wait till the penultimate moment to give bad news.
This is also a kind of doorknob disclosure.
Feeling Sleepy? Look Up
Remember those post-lunch lectures where you try your best to stay awake but your head keeps rolling every few seconds.
Turns out there is a simple solution to this problem.
Feeling sleepy, look up.
That’s it.
Andrew Huberman is a renowned neuroscience professor at Stanford.
In one of his videos, he suggests one can fight laziness just by looking up for 10-15 seconds.
According to him when we look up our brain is wired to heighten our alertness which in turn affects our wakefulness.
The science behind is a bit tricky for which I will recommend you to watch the above video. It’s only 5 minutes long.
I tried this trick a few times. It does seem to work, but isn't that convincing.
Let me know your experiences.
J.K. Rowling Suite
JK Rowling was scuffling to finish the final book of her popular Harry Potter series.
The pressure was immense. She had to do justice to the magical world conjured by her.
The story goes that while finishing Deathly Hallows, the author struggled to find some peace and quiet to write.
That’s when she decided to shift to the five-star hotel Balmoral Hotel to alter her environment.
Her writing went so well that she kept coming back to the hotel.
In August 2006, J.K. Rowling discreetly ‘moved in’ to finish the final Harry Potter novel. The room where she stayed is now called the J.K. Rowling Suite.
Cal Newport calls such acts, the grand gestures.
He talks about this in his book Deep Work.
By leveraging a radical change to your normal environment, coupled perhaps with a significant investment of effort or money, all dedicated toward supporting a deep work task, you increase the perceived importance of the task. This boost in importance reduces your mind’s instinct to procrastinate and delivers an injection of motivation and energy. - Deep Work
Next time you are looking for motivation you know what to do.
Hope you enjoyed this edition.
Signing off for today :) Until next time, Houdoe! 🙋♂️
