A couple of years back a friend of mine once confessed that he bought a diary for journaling.
Immediately after the purchase, instead of journaling, he shared its photo on his Instagram handle.
Sounds familiar?
We all are trapped in this cycle of sharing stuff that makes us look good on social media.
It may be a post-workout selfie or a bestseller you recently devoured.
Interestingly soon enough we don’t feel pretty good about posting it. There’s a guilt that we somehow tarnished the same accomplishment.
Well, I have been there too.
Earlier things weren’t like this I suppose. People didn’t go through their day telling everyone that they had gone for a run or planning to start a side hustle. They just did them. Or possibly they didn’t have the tools to reach tons of people within seconds.
However thanks to social media we have a million eyes glued to us every moment.
This constant surveillance breeds insecurity within us. The only antidote is validation.
And talking about positive habits like working out or journaling will award you with plenty of that.
Frankly, I am not against the practice.
If sharing your workout pics daily helps you to stick to exercise then it’s a win-win situation for you. Who knows, it might encourage someone in your circle to improve.
But I will still advise you to contemplate your actions.
One of the reasons I quit Instagram was because instead of enjoying books I was consistently on the lookout for lines that earn me some brownie points.
Is there a hidden agenda behind broadcasting your accomplishments?
Are you doing stuff for yourself or for social approval?
Can you carry out those activities if you stop sharing them?
Give it a thought.
Happy Sunday :) have a great week ahead.
